Docent talk and potluck Sunday, August 26 at 5 PM
Michael Potter will make a presentation on Swedish ships named Gotland Sunday, August 26 at 5 PM. This will be followed by short announcements from the board and a potluck.
Swedish ships that have shared only the name Gotland have touched wider events far from Sweden. Two of those ships introduced new technology in marine engineering.
The Swedish navy cruiser Gotland during the Second World War precipitated the greatest naval chase of all time, the pursuit of the German battleship Bismarck, which also surreptitiously involved U.S. naval personnel in combat more than six months before Pearl Harbor.
The Swedish navy submarine Gotland, active today, has operated here in San Diego to provide today’s U.S. Navy with experience in detecting submarines of advanced technology.
Our speaker is Michael Potter, who in 2003 retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve as a captain, equivalent to colonel. Michael became interested in the cruiser Gotland of the World War Two era at first as a hobby. Interested Swedes sent him copies of actual war diaries, or logs.
We here at our House of Sweden and Michael first met when our Ingrid Englund helped to translate those logs to English. Parts of the logs were in a code that Michael cracked. Michael has compiled information new to historians. Today he shares with us the history of Swedish ships named Gotland.
